If you are building a new garage and plan to use it a lot, it can be cold during the winter months if you do not set it up right. In order to stay warm, the best thing you can do is to insulate the garage. During construction is the best time to do this. There are different types of insulation that are available.

Blanket Insulation

Blanket insulation is the most common type that was used in the past and is still used in many homes. Because your garage is unfinished, you can likely install blanket insulation on your own. This type is made with fiberglass in most cases.

The insulation is cut into strips to fit in the space between the studs. You are able to cut the insulation if you need to shorten the length. Measure the spaces where you are insulating so you know how much you will need. You do need to know that fiberglass is dangerous if you breathe it in. Because of this make sure you wear a face mask when installing it. It can also cause your skin to become irritated so also wear long sleeves and gloves.

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation which is great  for sealing small gaps and leaks that are in the walls. The insulation is made of liquid polyurethane and equipment is used to spray the insulation into the wall. You can also use spray foam insulation to cover large areas in the garage. Once sprayed, the insulation hardens very quickly so it stays in place.

Because you likely do not have the equipment to use for this, you should hire a professional to insulate your garage. If you choose to rent the equipment, it would likely be very expensive.

Blown In Insulation

Blown in insulation is another type. With this, a machine is used to blow the insulation into the space that is being insulated. The insulation is made of a recycled material, such as newspapers and cardboard and feels much like paper. Rock wool and fiberglass are also used for blown in insulation in some cases. The professional that you hire will decide what type is best to use for your garage.

If you want to do this on your own, you do have to rent the equipment to do this. Because of this, consider hiring a professional.

Having energy efficient windows and making sure the garage door is properly sealed will also help your garage stay warmer.
